Fine and Scarce Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Two-Sided Incised Bird Decoration, Albany, NY origin, circa 1800-1810, ovoid jar with heavily-tooled shoulder, footed base, and applied lug handles, decorated on the front with an incised and cobalt-highlighted design of a ring-necked bird perched on a stylized leaf or mound, feeding on a cluster of incised berries. Reverse decorated with another incised design of a bird, depicted with fuller body and shorter neck. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Heavy chipping to base. Rim misshapen during the firing. Light surface wear to shoulder area. Wide, in-the-firing vertical surface crack to interior, visible as a recessed area with faint line on exterior. A faint 5" vertical line below bird decoration on front. A minor, 1/2" in-the-firing fissure to interior of rim. Various in-the-firing iron pings to surface. H 12 1/4".
