Outstanding Four-Gallon Stoneware Flowerpot with Elaborate Cobalt Bird, Tree, and Fence Scene, Stamped "WEST TROY, / N.Y. / POTTERY.," circa 1875, flaring for with semi-rounded rim, applied lug handles, and attached saucer, decorated with a slip-trailed scene of four trees and a fence, surrounded by eleven flying birds. Extensive ground cover below. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Relatively few salt-glazed stoneware flowerpots were produced in 19th century America. Northeastern stoneware flowerpots, when found, typically feature floral, foliate, or singular bird designs, making this example's large pastoral scene exceptionally rare. Excellent condition, noteworthy for this form. A small rim chip on reverse. A few minor to small rim chips. Some fry to cobalt. A small amount of white paint residue to reverse.
