Outstanding Large-Sized Stoneware Presentation Urn with Cobalt Floral, Dot, and Eagle Decoration, Stamped "WM E. WARNER / WEST TROY," NY State origin, circa 1850, approximately four-gallon tapered pot with semi-rounded rim, applied lug handles, and six original drain holes at base. Inscribed in large cobalt script on front and back "Nancy & Martha / From / G," surrounded by numerous slip-trailed flowers. One side additionally features apple or wreath-shaped slip-trailing flanking the maker's mark. Underside of one handle features a spread-winged eagle holding a dotted banner, a highly-prized design found on other examples of Warner's work. Underside of opposite handle features floral and vine designs. Arguably, one of the most visually-appealing aspects of the urn is the abundant use of slip-trailed cobalt spots. The rim features two rows of this ornamentation, and an incised wavy line at shoulder is accented with slip-trailed spots above and below, as are the handles. A masterpiece of New York State stoneware, this urn is a rarity in terms of form, decoration, and condition. It is a remarkable survivor given that it was intended to be planted with flowers. Given its exceptional condition, it is likely the urn was scarcely, if ever, used. Faint surface line on underside, not visible on interior, which extends 1 1/2" onto base. Chip to interior of rim. U-shaped hairline at top of rim. Minor wear. H 13 1/2" ; Diameter (at opening) 11 1/2".
