One-and-a-Half-Gallon Stoneware Batter Pail with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "SIPE, NICHOLS & CO. / Williamsport, Pa.," circa 1875.Fine One-Gallon Stoneware Batter Pail with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "SIPE, NICHOLS & CO. / Williamsport, Pa.," circa 1875, ovoid form with tubular pouring spout, handle at base on reverse, and wood-and-wire bail handle, decorated on the reverse with a brushed design of a graduated flower blossom emanating from a cluster of leaves. This decoration is repeated on the front, but was mostly lost during manufacture. A small amount of cobalt brushwork appears at the base of the spout. Faint cobalt highlights to maker's mark and applied clay ears. Includes metal lid and spout cover. A 7/8" chip to handle on reverse, beside a small handle chip. Wear along openings of applied clay ears, through which the bail handle is attached. A small rim chip and minor glazed-over rim chip. H 10".
