Eight-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Decoration, Stenciled "HAMILTON & JONES. / GREENSBORO. / PA," circa 1875, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with freehand stripes and vining to the shoulder area and Hamilton & Jones maker's stenciling flanked by freehand and stylized flourishes at the midsection. Base with freehand "8" flanked by flourishes and underscored by wavy stripes. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. One handle with a 1 3/4" chip and 1" chip. Thin cracks throughout opposite handle. Network of tight cracks in underside, including two cracks extending partway up front of jar. A few very minor flakes below rim. Two minor nicks to molding below rim. H 19 3/4".
