Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Canning Jar with Stenciled Shield Motif, Stenciled "JAS. HAMILTON & CO. / GREENSBORO, / PA.," circa 1875, tapered jar with semi-rounded "wax sealer" rim, featuring James Hamilton maker's stenciling and various flourishes surrounded by a large shield. Freehand stripes to shoulder and base. Jar is lopsided. A 6 3/4" inverted Y-shaped crack from rim on left side of jar. A small chip to interior of rim. Some small spots of old paint residue (unrelated to any restoration) and light staining to surface. H 9 1/2".
