Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Grapes Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large cluster of grapes hanging from a leafy vine. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. Exceptional color. A thin 7" crack from rim on far right side of jar's front, descending from a minor rim chip. A thin 5" crack from rim on far left side of jar's front. A small in-the-firing iron ping to right of decoration. Three cracks from rim on reverse: a 6" inverted fork-shaped crack with tiny chips along crack line, another 6" crack, and a 3" crack descending from a minor chip. Two small in-the-firing lines in rim on reverse. A 1 1/8" chip to underside at edge. H 13".
