Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Leaf Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG. PA," circa 1865, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated three heavily-brushed leaves emanating from a stem. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. Staining to surface. A 2 1/2" horizontal Y-shaped surface line to shoulder on front, not visible on interior. A 2 3/4" X-shaped surface line to right of decoration on front, not visible on interior. A 5/8" hairline from rim on right side of jar. A tight 3 1/2" H-shaped surface line on reverse, not visible on interior. A 3" Y-shaped surface line to side of jar, not visible on interior. A 1 1/8" x 3/4" base flake. A 4 3/4" spider line to underside, not visible on interior. A tiny chip and minor wear to one handle. H 11 1/2".
