Exceptional Four-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Pheasant-on-Stump Decoration, Stamped "HAXSTUN OTTMAN & CO / FORT EDWARD N.Y.," circa 1875, large-sized, cylindrical jug with tapered spout, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a crested pheasant with turned head, perched on a tree stump atop a shrubbed ground. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Excellent size to jug and decoration, the decoration measuring an impressive 12" on the jug's front. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Provenance: Recently surfaced in New Jersey. A few minor in-the-firing pings to jug's front. Staining around base area. Traces of old paint, unrelated to any sort of restoration, to lower handle area. A small chip to interior of spout. A minuscule nick to exterior of spout. H 17".
