Outstanding Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Foliate Star Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with eight foliate devices radiating from a central spot, forming a star. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. Provenance: Michael Wissler Collection. Large, partially-restored fork-shaped crack extending from shoulder to base on reverse. Part of this fork continues as an unrestored, but sealed, crack that extends onto the far right side of the jar's front. Three in-the-firing unglazed contact marks at base. A few minor flakes to Albany slip on interior shoulder. H 13".
