Fine One-Gallon Stoneware Batter Pail with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "SIPE NICHOLS & CO. / Williamsport, Pa.," circa 1880, ovoid form with tubular pouring spout, wood-and-wire bail handle, and applied clay handle at base on reverse. Decorated on the front with two curved-stem flowers featuring conical blossoms along with brushwork at the base of spout. Reverse decorated with a larger rendering of the floral motif on the front. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, handle terminals, and applied clay ears at shoulder. Includes reproduction lid and spout cover, made from old tin. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with a minor line to handle at base on reverse, a minor glazed-over dent at base on reverse, a minor line to rim of spout, and a minor in-the-firing iron ping to reverse. H 9 1/4".
