Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Canning Jug with Cobalt Foliate Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, ovoid jug with wide, flaring collar and inset rim, the front decorated with a brushed foliate device. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and handle terminals. Provenance: Michael Wissler Collection. Several rim chips. A minor 1 1/2" in-the-firing surface fissure to underside, which does not extend through to interior, and includes a much smaller fissure next to it. Collar is somewhat slumped. H 10 7/8".
