Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Bird-on-Branch Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG," PA origin, circa 1865, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed design of a crested bird with heavy feather detail, perched on a striped branch. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. The design on this jar differs markedly in style from typical bird motifs by Cowden & Wilcox. Provenance: Michael Wissler Collection. Heavy chipping to right handle. A small chip to left handle. A small rim chip above left handle. Some small areas of fry to cobalt.
