Scarce Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Bird-with-Worm Decoration, Stamped 'COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, stepped rim, and lug handles, decorated with a brushed design of a bird with large eye and spotted wing, perched on a large tree stump, holding a worm in its beak. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. Unusual folky design. Tight crack across underside, extending 7" diagonally up front of jar. Areas of staining. A small area of light exfoliation to base on front. A small rim chip. A few in-the-firing base flakes/chips, the largest measuring 1 3/4". H 12 3/4".
