Rare Two-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jug with Iron Slip Inscription "Waranted / 2," Stamped "CHANDLER / MAKer," Thomas Chandler, Edgefield District, SC, circa 1850, ovoid jug with tooled spout, decorated with the slip-trailed iron slip inscription, "Waranted / 2," against a gray-green alkaline-glazed ground. Impressed with Thomas Chandler maker's mark to shoulder. The rare slip inscriptions, "Waranted" or "Waranted Good," were used by Chandler for a period to indicate that his ware was warranted to be good for use. Provenance: A South Carolina private collection. Professionally restored handle. Some professional restoration to top tier of spout. H 14".
