Rare One-Gallon Brown-Slip-Decorated Stoneware Crock, Stamped "JOHN B. PEWTRESS / SOUTH AMBOY," NJ origin, circa 1830, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, tall squared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed design of a curved-stem tulip in reddish-brown slip, likely composed of either iron oxide or manganese dioxide. The first piece of stoneware bearing this stamp that we have offered. An in-the-firing semi-circular surface crack to underside, not visible on interior. An in-the-firing spidering surface crack to interior, not visible on underside. Two small chips to exterior of rim, one of which occurred in the firing. A tiny chip to interior of rim. A 1 1/4" crack above one right handle. A small in-the-firing ping below one terminal of left handle.
