Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Elaborate Cobalt Flowering Urn Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON VT", circa 1855, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of a floral spray emanating from a pedestal-based urn with open handles. The inclusion of two fences flanking the urn is most unusual and the size of the entire design is exceptional. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Large areas of restoration to rim. Large area of restoration on reverse. Network of spider lines on side of crock, a small portion of which is barely visible on interior. An approximately 3" Y-shaped line on reverse, partially visible on interior. A few additional surface lines to base area on front, extending onto side, not visible on interior.
