Fine Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Flowering Urn Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON VT," circa 1855, cylindrical jug with semi-squared spout, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a pedestal-based urn with open handles, brimming with a large floral spray. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. A thin Y-shaped crack to reverse shoulder, extending through base of handle and continuing several inches below handle. One crack that forms the top of the Y continues onto the right side of the jug at the shoulder and terminates at the top of the maker's mark on the front. One base chip. A small, glazed-over iron ping where the top of the handle meets the jug's spout.
