Rare Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Face Jug, Signed "Lanier Meaders," Cleveland, GA, circa late 1960s-1970, ovoid jug with applied facial features including kaolin eyes with unusual cobalt pupils, crimped ears, nose with faintly-depressed nostrils, and closed mouth. Dramatic indentations to the sides of the jug produce the figure's cheek structure. Surface covered in a lightly-applied, olive-colored alkaline glaze. Underside incised with Lanier Meaders signature. A fine, early example of Meaders' work, indicated by the overall style of the face, which includes a closed, toothless mouth, simplistic nose, and recessed cheeks, as well as its light application of glaze and glazing to the eyes. Excellent, essentially as-made condition. H 10 1/2".
