Rare Two-Gallon Elmira, NY Stoneware Advertising Jug with Cobalt Paddletail Bird Decoration, attributed to the White's Pottery, Utica, NY, circa 1885, cylindrical jug with tooled spout, decorated with brushed and slip-trailed design of a crested bird with paddle-shaped tail, perched on a stem. Impressed above with the advertising, "JOHN KENNEDY. / WHOLESALE GROCER. / 104 &106 EAST WATER / ELMIRA N,Y." Cobalt highlights to advertising and capacity mark. Excellent color. Relatively few White's Pottery advertising pieces with paddletail birds are known. Spout chips. Otherwise minor flaws, including a minor flake to cobalt at base of decoration, minor chipping to bottom edge, a thin, curved in-the-firing fissure on underside, and a faint line at base of handle.
