Rare Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Large Slip-Trailed Greyhound Decoration, Stamped "WHITES UTICA," circa 1870, straight-sided jar with applied handles, slip-cup-decorated on the front with a large greyhound with turned head standing on a detailed ground. Dog is artistically rendered with graceful legs, curled tail, and a heavily-shaded body. Dots of cobalt along the ground form grasses and a bush below the dog. A rare and attractive decoration. 3 1/2" spider line on reverse, connecting to a 10" horizontal line at base on side of jar, which continues partway onto front of jar below decoration. Y-shaped crack in underside. Tiny, in-the-making stone ping on dog"s leg. A few handle chips and a few rim chips on reverse. Height 12 1/4".
