Fine and Scarce Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Man-in-the-Moon Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, ovoid jug with semi-rounded spout, decorated with a large brushed design of a smiling man's profile with long nose, surrounded by crescent-shaped foliate brushwork. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. Among the largest-sized renderings of this iconic Central Pennsylvania design that we have offered. Fry to figure's eye. Crack in base of handle. A faint 2 1/2" hairline from spout. Minor chipping to edge of spout.
