Very Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Canning Jug with Cobalt Grapes Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, ovoid jug with flared mouth including an inset rim designed to hold a tin canning lid; decorated with a brushed design of a cluster of grapes hanging from a stem with leaf and looping vine. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and handle terminals. Professional restoration to surface of jug on reverse, relegated to the jug's bottom half. This restoration extends onto jug's right side at base and includes a partially-visible, thin spider crack. Some fry to cobalt. A thin in-the-firing contact mark to left side of jug near base. Some very minor spout chips.
