Scarce Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stenciled "H. & S. SWANK / JOHNSTOWN," circa 1885, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, squared rim, and applied tab handles, decorated on one side with a flowering vine in the Swank style. Reverse faintly-stenciled, H. &. S. SWANK / JOHNSTOWN PA." Cobalt stripe decoration under each handle. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Impressed "4" under one handle. A few rim chips. Stenciling is very faint. The initials, "PA," typically seen after "JOHNSTOWN" are not visible.
