Five-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, attributed to George and/or Albert Black, Somerfield or Confluence, PA, circa 1855-1865, semi-ovoid jar with tapered rim, ribbed lug handles, and tooling to shoulder and body, decorated on the front and reverse with a finely-brushed flowering vine, applied over slip-coated clay. Brushed stripe decoration above and cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Freehand cobalt "5" to shoulder. Rim chips, including a 2" rim chip above left handle. Jar is slightly out-of-round. Some minor wear to surface.
