Fine Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Bird Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON, / BENNINGTON, VT.," circa 1855, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a crested bird with long tail, perched on a stylized branch. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. A tiny in-the-firing iron ping to front. Small chips to interior of rim. Hairline to base area on reverse. A chip to left handle. Some staining. A 4 1/4" vertical surface line to far left side of jar's front, not visible on interior. Some staining to sides and reverse.
