Scarce Two-Gallon Stoneware Batter Pail with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, ovoid form with tubular pouring spout, applied clay ears with wood-and-wire bail handle, and handle at base on reverse, decorated with large hanging floral motifs extending around the front of the pail, wreath-like brushwork surrounding the base of the spout, and large floral spray to reverse. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, ears, and handle terminals. Unusual size of a coveted Cowden & Wilcox form, featuring strong decoration on the front. Significant restoration to pouring spout, including a small restored chip to rim of pail directly above spout. A thin 5" crack on underside, extending 5 1/2" up side of batter pail. A 3 1/2" hairline from rim on front. A minor rim chip. Chips to handle on reverse. A small base chip.
