Fine Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Elaborate Buffalo, NY Advertising and Cobalt Floral Decoration, Buffalo, NY origin, circa 1840, highly-ovoid jug with semi-rounded spout, featuring the impressed and cobalt-highlighted advertising, "COPAL VARNISH NO. 1 / FROM / LUCIUS H. PRATT / GENERAL DEALER.IN / GROCERIES PAINTS.OILS &C / NO 163 OPPOSITE.THE. / COMMERCIAL.BANK / MAIN.STREET.BUFFALO.NY." Midsection decorated with a large tulip motif including dashes to the interior of the blossom. Cobalt highlight to capacity mark. A spout chip and some in-the-firing roughness along top edge of spout. A minor in-the-firing contact mark to front. Some staining to surface. Minor base wear.
