Four-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA", circa 1865, ovoid jug with tooled shoulder and tapered spout, decorated with an X-shaped design of a graduated blossoms and leaves conjoined at the stem, surrounded by spots and foliate devices. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. Excellent color. Very nice condition. Two short lines emanating from small pings or post-firing contact points on reverse. A 1 3/8" in-the-firing contact mark to handle. A small piece of adhered clay where spout meets handle. A shallow in-the-firing contact mark to spout. A small spout chip. Minor wear to interior of spout. A glazed-over iron ping at base on front. A few base chips.
