Four-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Jar with Wheeling, WV Advertising, Western PA origin, circa 1875, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-squared rim, featuring the stenciled advertising, "J.E. MORRIS. / DEALER IN / STAPLE / & FANCY / GROCERIES. / No. 119 SIXTEENTH ST. / WHEELING. W. VA." Decorated below with a freehand "4" flanked by flourishes, as well as at the shoulder and base with straight and wavy stripes. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with water glass residue to interior.
