Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Elaborate Cobalt Birds-on-Stump Decoration, Stamped "NEW YORK / STONEWARE CO. / FORT EDWARD, N.Y.", circa 1875, cylindrical jug with squared spout, decorated with a slip-trailed design of three birds perched on a large tree stump surrounded by shrubs. One of a very few examples of this triple-bird motif that we have seen in Fort Edward stoneware production. Some in-the-firing saltiness to decoration. Areas of wear to surface and decoration. Spout chips. A small base chip on reverse and side of jug.
