Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Eagle-and-Banner Decoration, Inscribed "UNION & LIBERTY," Stamped "OTTMAN BRO'S / & CO. / FORT EDWARD, N.Y.," circa 1876, cylindrical crock with applied lug handles and semi-rounded rim, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a flying eagle holding a banner in its beak, inscribed "UNION & LIBERTY." Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Outside of the work of William Macquoid, relatively few New York State stoneware pieces with inscribed banners are known. Large area of restoration to right of decoration. Two spots of staining on reverse/side. Spider lines to surface of underside, not visible on interior. H 11 1/4".
