Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Cake Crock with Cobalt Flying Eagle Decoration, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON VT," circa 1855, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a flying eagle above a stylized ground with shrubs and a fence. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. A scarce and desirable Norton figural motif, rarely-seen on this form. Restoration to two reglued V-shaped sections descending from rim on front. Entire restoration section measures approximately 5 1/4" x 5 1/4". A crack extending across most of underside and 5 1/4" diagonally up reverse. A diagonal 3 1/4" surface line on reverse, not visible on interior. A shallow 5/8" rim chip on reverse. Minor chips to interior of rim. A 1 1/2" crack from rim on left side of crock. H 7 3/4" ; Diam. 11 3/8".
