Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Incised Foliate Decoration, Stamped "J. REMMEY / MANHATTAN-WELLS / NEW-YORK," circa 1810, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, footed base, and open loop handles, decorated on the reverse with an incised and cobalt-highlighted foliate motif in the Manhattan style. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and handle terminals. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. A 6 1/2" J-shaped crack from rim on front, descending to the right of the maker's mark. A thin 5" crack from rim to left of maker's mark.
