Scarce Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Incised Floral Decoration, Stamped "J. REMMEY / MANHATTAN-WELLS / NEW-YORK," John Remmey III, Manhattan, NY, circa 1810, ovoid jar with footed base, tooled shoulder, and open loop handles, decorated on the reverse with an incised and cobalt-highlighted design of a large-leafed stem bearing a looping flower blossom. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and handle terminals. This jar features one of the more elaborate incised designs that we have offered on a piece of signed Remmey stoneware from Manhattan. Provenance: American Pottery Auction, 9/16/06, Lot 7. Spidering lines throughout much of surface, not visible on interior. Small base chips. Tiny rim chips. Residue from use to surface.
