Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Eagle Decoration, Stamped "WM E. WARNER / WEST-TROY.", NY State origin, circa 1855, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder and applied lug handles, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of a flying eagle carrying a banner and leafy garland in its beak. Heavy spotted details to bird's body. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. This example of one of Warner's most desirable designs is unusual in its inclusion of both a banner and a garland in its beak. Typically, only a banner is shown. Significant exfoliation to shoulder area, particularly on right side and reverse. A long crack from rim on front. A reverse-L-shaped crack from rim on reverse. A 1 3/8" in-the-firing iron ping to reverse. Some minor exfoliation to base.
