Very Rare One-Gallon Glazed Redware Jug, Stamped "G:S", George Smith, Woodward, Centre County, PA, circa 1836-1861, ovoid jug with footed base, tapered spout, and heavily-ribbed handle, the surface covered in a lead glaze, imparting a mottled olive-and-orange coloration to the clay. Underside impressed with George Smith maker's mark. One of a small number of signed pieces by this potter known. Literature: For information on this potter, see Jeanette Lasansky, Central Pennsylvania Redware Pottery 1780-1904, p. 29 and 56. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor decades ago. A base chip and other light base wear. Light wear to handle. An area of light wear to shoulder.
