Four-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Double Bird Decoration, Stamped "S. HART / FULTON", NY State origin, circa 1860, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-squared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of crossed birds, featuring spotted bodies and cobalt-highlighted wings. Looping flourish below. Slip-trailed "4" to the left of the birds, underscored by a wavy line. Slip-trailed cobalt highlights to maker's mark. Sticky residue and staining to surface from use. A chip to right handle. A 1 1/4" flake and 1" chip to interior of rim. A 3/4" smooth, shallow flake to top of rim, possibly in-the-firing. A few small in-the-firing pings to left side of crock's front.
