Four-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Elaborate Cobalt Decoration of a Bird in Naturalistic Setting, Stamped "HAXSTUN, OTTMAN & CO. / FORT EDWARD N.Y.", circa 1870, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large slip-trailed scene featuring a long-billed bird perched on a large striped stump, flanked by a tree and tall grasses. Light cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. The form of the bird, style of the stump, and inclusion of a tree into the scene are all unusual for this maker. A large, 4 1/2" x 1 3/4" flake to underside at edge, part of which is visible when crock is standing upright. A long, glazed-over in-the-firing line to base area. A small chip to interior of rim. Some water glassing staining to interior.
