Four-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Chicken Decoration, Stamped "J. NORTON & CO. / BENNINGTON VT.", circa 1860, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a pecking chicken on a stylized ground. A 3 1/2" crack from rim on left side of crock's front. A sealed spider crack on underside, continuing as a single crack up left side of crock, stopping directly below handle. An in-the-firing iron ping to shoulder. Long network of tight lines at base on reverse, not visible on interior. Shallow chipping to interior of rim. A few small chips to exterior of rim. Exfoliation to Albany slip on interior base.
