Rare Five-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Elaborate Cobalt Reclining Doe Scene, Stamped "FORT EDWARD / POTTERY CO.", George Satterlee, Fort Edward, NY, circa 1859, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of a doe reclining atop a stylized ground, flanked by stumps, with heavy shrubs and ground cover throughout. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. The size of the decoration on this example, including its unusually-elaborate ground cover, is noteworthy. Faint spider lines on underside, one of which continues 2 1/4" up base on front. A 3" vertical surface line on front, not visible on interior. A small chip and tiny nick to rim.
