Extremely Rare Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Rundlet, Dated Twice "1799", probably Manhattan, NY, 1799, ovoid form with recessed top and bottom, the upper and lower body embellished with tooled and cobalt-highlighted banding. Applied bunghole at center with chip-carved accents, surrounded by cobalt slip. Top and bottom of rundlet incised with the cobalt-highlighted date "1799", underscored by a cobalt stripe. Desirable form and exceptionally early age. One of a relatively small number of dated 18th century American stoneware objects known. Excellent condition with minor chips to bunghole. H 8".
