Four-Gallon Double-Handled Stoneware Jug with Wheeling, WV Advertising, Western PA origin, circa 1875, ovoid jug with tooled spout and two open handles, the front featuring the stenciled cobalt advertising, "JOHN REID JR. / GROCER / WHOLESALE / LIQUOR DEALER. / 1518 MAIN ST. / WHEELING / W.V". Large fuchsia decoration to shoulder. Wavy stripes and foliate motifs to body. Base with stenciled "4", flanked by stenciled flourishes and underscored by a freehand stripe. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Provenance: Collection of Harry Meyer, McDonald, PA. One handle restored. Otherwise excellent condition.
