Rare Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Foliate Decoration, Stamped "N.C. BELL / CORNWALL / N*Y", second quarter 19th century, ovoid, bowl-shaped jar with tooled shoulder and applied lug handles, decorated with a V-shaped foliate motif at the shoulder. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Shoulder impressed with oval "N.C. BELL / CORNWALL" maker's mark, incorporating a smaller oval, marked "NY", with star at center. A desirable and rarely-found NY State maker's mark on an appealing form. Provenance: Purchased by the consignor ten years ago in the Poughkeepsie, NY area. A tight 3" crack on underside, continuing 6" up front. A small in-the-firing iron ping to shoulder. A minor rim chip. Two minor base nicks, one of which is glazed over.
