Fine Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Swan Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA", circa 1865, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-squared rim, decorated with a brushed design of a swan swimming on water. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. A desirable Cowden & Wilcox motif, exhibiting excellent color. Provenance: From a recently-surfaced collection of Cowden & Wilcox stoneware. Very nice condition with a minor rim chip, a small chip to one handle, a minor nick and tiny iron ping to opposite handle, and some in-the-firing bubbling to cobalt on swan's head.
