Fine Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Freehand Cobalt Decoration, attributed to the Thompson Pottery, Morgantown, WV, circa 1870, semi-ovoid jar with combed body, tooled shoulder, semi-squared rim, and extruded lug handles, decorated with a brushed undulating vine between freehand stripes, above three rows of flower blossoms separated by additional freehand stripes. Freehand "4" at base. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Reverse with four-gallon Thompson capacity mark. Provenance: Collection of Lorren Lambert, Staunton, VA. Very nice condition. Some smooth, shallow chips and wear to interior of rim. A 1 1/4" flake to reverse end of one handle.
