Six-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, attributed to S. A. Colvin & Sons, Jane Lew, WV, circa 1885, large-sized, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and semi-rounded rim, decorated with a flowering plant bearing striped leaves and a blossom surrounded by dashed accents, the shoulder inscribed "6" below a wavy freehand stripe. The flower on this jar differs markedly from the pottery's typical "lady slipper" design. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, from a twenty-year private collection. A thin 4" crack from rim on front. An 8" inverted Y-shaped line from rim on reverse, visible on interior and partially visible on exterior. The front of the rim slumped slightly during the firing. A faint Y-shaped line on underside, not visible on interior. H 14 1/2".
