Scarce Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Man-in-the-Moon Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA", circa 1865, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, tall collar, and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed design of a man's profile flanked by a crescent-shaped group of leaves. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. A highly-prized Cowden & Wilcox motif. A hairline on front extending from rim to shoulder area. Rim chips. Shallow chips and wear to interior of rim. Wear to one handle. Some minor surface flakes to base on right side of jar. H 11 3/4".
