Five-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Large Cobalt Floral Decoration, Western PA origin, circa 1860, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, flattened rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large tulip plant design featuring three long stems emanating from the base. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Impressed "5" on reverse. In-the-firing salt drips as well as a small embedded stone on front. An in-the-firing recessed spot below an in-the-firing surface chip below one handle. A 4" x 2 3/4" in-the-firing contact mark below opposite handle. A Y-shaped hairline across underside. Jar is slightly out-of-round.
