Two-Gallon Lidded Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "CORTLAND", Madison Woodruff and Romanzo Smith, Cortland, NY, circa 1867-1869, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, flared collar, and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed and slip-trailed floral design featuring three blossoms. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and impressed "X" mark to right of capacity mark. Includes nicely-fitting, salt-glazed lid, possibly original to the jar. Jar in excellent condition with a rim chip, an in-the-firing rim nick, and very minor wear to inner rim for lid. Lid with hairline and chip to knob and rim.
